~*CHiNa WoN't Be ToYeD WiTH*~

Barbara Demick’s humorous article for the Los Angeles Times entitled “China Won’t Be Toyed With” describes the confusion on the Chinese public on the fact that presidential candidate Barack Obama suggested a boycott of toy imports from China, the leading marketer of toys- producing around 80% of the world’s toys. Recently, consumers of these items- including toys and other Chinese manufactured things such as toothpaste- have expressed their concern for their health and safety. One crucial hazard is paint containing lead. The Chinese wonder what the cause of such uproar is. Some suggest jealousy from the U.S as a possible source. Chen Xeuhua, a saleswoman, declares, “Americans are only picking on us because our economy is doing well and we’re getting the Olympics.” Because of this sudden revelation by Obama, some Chinese have spoken out, saying “That [something something] won’t get elected if he tries to ban Chinese toys” and calling him “Worse than Bush!” Demick point out that while Barack Obama might be headed to possible presidential stardom, he probably won’t get the Chinese popular vote.

Questions:

  • Why does Obama want to place a ban on Chinese toys?
  • If he was successful in accomplishing this, how would it affect the U.S economy?

Hi!! :D

well, if Obama became president, and if he successfully banned "Made In China" toys, where would we get our precious toys that keep us from going into insanity?! ;) anyway, it seems that we rely a lot on China for toys. Things to be banned from China: today.......toys, tomorrow.........chinese food!clothes!electronics! everything! thats what i think.

Mrs. Petrelli. :P

if obama's rash resolution to the defective chinese toys is to ban them then it is stupidious..if passed we would loose a chunk of our ecomomy..also this propisition can lead to great tension between one of our good suppliers...because isnt everything made in china these days?...oh ye optimum job...might jack this article

I do not see the logic in banning Chinese made toys. Maybe it's to give American toy maufactures a chance but hey...if they ain't got tickle me Elmo then I'm not buying from them.lol. Speaking seriously though, he is probably looking out for the American markets, by banning foriegn products so we buy from our own manufacturers

its a pretty dumb idea banning chinese toys or anything from china at all because if stuff wasnt made over there where people(including kids)get paid like 3 cents a week manufacturing our products, those peoducts would be possibly made here in the US...where prices to manufacture such items will cost A LOT more than it costs over there...raising our prices over here by a VERY large percentage and affecting our economy A LOT

if this(and other things like this)is what obama plans to do as president...then he probably shouldnt be elected...

Even though Obama might be trying to conserve the U.S: for more populatiry in the toy business, its a stupid idea. It has no logic to think that we are going to ban things from china, if even our styrofome (did i misspell¿?) comes from china, and like someone else said, if Obama is elected, were going down.....nice article, i liked it ver mucho....greets from El Salvador!
